You Don't Need a Yard to Start Gardening

For years I told myself I couldn't be a gardener because I lived in an apartment with zero outdoor space. No backyard, no balcony, not even a fire escape worth mentioning. Turns out, that was just an excuse.

Container gardening changed everything for me. All you need is a pot, some soil, and a window that gets decent light. I started with cherry tomatoes in a five-gallon bucket on my living room sill and a couple of herb pots in the kitchen. Both did surprisingly well.

The key is matching your plants to your light. South-facing windows are gold, but east or west can work too—just pick plants that tolerate partial shade. Leafy greens like lettuce and spinach are forgiving if your light isn't perfect. Herbs like basil and mint are almost embarrassingly easy.

Drainage matters more than pot size. If water can't escape, roots rot. Make sure your containers have holes in the bottom, and set them on a tray to catch runoff. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry, not on a rigid schedule—your plants will tell you what they need.

Don't overspend on gear. A bag of potting mix, a few basic containers, and a packet of seeds will run you under twenty dollars. Skip the fancy self-watering systems until you know you enjoy this. Half the fun is learning as you go, and honestly, killing a plant or two is part of the process. Just try again.
